Every teacher on this platform shaped something in my work. Mary Bowen shaped something in me.
Mary Bowen is one of the original Pilates elders — a teacher of the deepest lineage and the longest devotion. But what she brought to me was not lineage. It was a mirror. She helped me see who I was as a teacher with a clarity that technique alone could never produce — and she gave me the courage to stand solidly on my own two feet, trusting my instincts, my heart, my gut, without apology and without imitation.
Her background in psychoanalysis gave her a way of understanding people — their bodies, their patterns, their defenses, their potential — that the Pilates method alone could not have offered me. She made the mind and the spirit genuinely meaningful within the work. She added a texture to the body I had not previously understood: the texture of the person living inside it, and what that person carries, protects, and is capable of releasing.
"She helped me be aware of what it means to be a Pilates teacher and be myself. Not to copy my mentors. Not to be someone else. But to truly find me."
She is fearless and funny. Completely honest. She has a way of cutting through the noise of what the industry thinks a teacher should be and pointing directly at what actually matters — which is showing up as a whole, real, grounded human being who does what is right in the moment without worrying about what anyone else thinks of it.
I would not be who I am in this industry without her. That is not something I say lightly. It is simply, quietly true.
Inside IVA you will find Mary's recorded workshops — her teaching, her perspective, her extraordinary ability to bring the psychological and the physical into a single, coherent, deeply human practice. You will hear her speak about the method in a way that includes the full person living inside the body. You will feel, even through the screen, that something in the room is completely honest.
What she offers is not a technique to learn. It is a mirror to stand in front of — long enough to actually see yourself. To recognize your patterns, your instincts, your particular way of being in the world, and to stop apologizing for any of it. To stand on your own two feet as the teacher you already are, rather than a reflection of those you have admired.
She is the foundation beneath everything else on this platform. I could not have built any of it — could not have truly learned from any of the other mentors here — without first finding myself in Mary's presence. I wish you that encounter, wholeheartedly and with deep gratitude for what it gave me.
Mary continues to teach with the depth, honesty, and humor that have always defined her. If what you find here calls you further, reach out to her directly. Get in touch →
